16113039 - kids and parents throwing snow on a winter hillEvery winter, you’re likely to find your family suffering from cabin fever at some point. It could be the weather, school holidays or just plain boredom. Whatever it is, if your family is suffering from the winter blues, these fun and cheap activities could be just the thing to alleviate the winter doldrums!

See our list of winter activity ideas for families to start planning your own this season:

If you live in the colder areas of the country and find yourself inundated with snow, why not try snowshoeing? No need to buy your own shoes. You can actually rent them cheaply by finding a local outdoor equipment rental supplier. The shoes can be rented for around $10 a pair so it won’t break the bank either. Snowshoeing is great fun and the kids will be sure to love it!

Sledding is always a great choice during the snowy days of winter. It’s free if you own a sled, but even if you don’t, sleds can be inexpensive to purchase. Find a park and go to town! It also provides you with great family photo ops and may lead to a snowball fight or two (to be followed, of course, by hot chocolate).

Tour the Neighborhood Christmas Lights

As we get closer to the holidays, more people will be decorating their homes with spectacular displays of lights. So why not pile into the car and take a free trip around the town to check out their hard work? The kids will love the lights and you will too!

Movies often offer great deals when the kids are out of school. You can take the family to an early afternoon or late morning flick at a discount or head to the dollar theater anytime to see a movie you might have missed the first time around. These are generally family-friendly films the kids will love.
